What is HackJPS?
HackJPS will be a hybrid (in person & virtual) hackathon hosted by students of John P. Stevens High School in Edison, NJ during the weekend of June 3rd, 2023. HackJPS was first hosted virtually in 2020 with over 300 participants, and was a great success.
Participation will be open to middle and high school students (aged 13+). Participants may have any level of experience, or none at all. We are welcoming to beginners and experts alike!
Additionally, participants will be able to attend in-person or virtual workshops hosted by sponsors or student organizations, exposing them to a multitude of other topics that might interest them.
For more information and updates, make sure to join our Discord server and check out our website.
Registration
Please register for HackJPS here on Devpost as well as through our registration form. This is a requirement!

Best Hack For Education
(3)
Education is the overall theme of HackJPS 2023. All submitted projects automatically will be eligible to be one of the top three hacks in the area of education.
Your project does not necessarily need to be a learning tool for students. It can also be something that would be useful to any kind of educator or school staff. That could mean principals, school security guards, cafeteria staff, or even the janitors! It's up to you to show us how your project is useful for any group of people involved with the field of education. This interpretation of the theme applies to ALL categories.
Remember, education-related projects don't necessarily need to be for students — see "Best Hack for Education" for more info!
Prizes:
1st: Google Nest Hub (randomly assigned to 1 winning team member), 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
2nd: 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
3rd: Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
Best Use of Machine Learning
(2)
Machine learning and artificial intelligence are the future! We're excited to see what creative ways you might be able to connect these technologies to the education field. Projects submitted to this category must use ML or AI in some capacity, but the models you use can be sourced from publicly accessible sources or external APIs.
Remember, education-related projects don't necessarily need to be for students — see "Best Hack for Education" for more info!
Prizes:
1st: 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
2nd: $25 AoPS coupon (for each member up to four members), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
Best Game Design
(2)
Games are fun! How can we bring that enjoyment into education? It's up to you to decide! Projects submitted to this category don't necessarily need to be games written from the ground up — they can also be modifications/plugins/extensions to existing games, provided your project adds enough original functionality.
2nd: 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
Public Choice
After submissions, all registrants on Devpost will be able to choose their favorite project, and that project will be eligible for some prizes. See the schedule for timing details.
Prizes:
1st: Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
Most Launchable Hack
Who says you should stop working on your project after HackJPS ends? Not us! If we think your project has great potential to be used in the real world, we'll award you with this prize!
Prizes:
1st: Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member), 2x $10 Google Fi Gift Card (for the team as a whole), GradeScout social media interview
Best Youth Hack
We know there's a lot of middle school students here. That's okay! To make the playing field a bit fairer, teams where 2/3, 3/4, or 4/5 members are registered as middle school students will be eligible to receive this prize! Try to fit your project within the general theme of education!
Prizes:
1st: Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member), 2x $10 Google Fi Gift Card (for the team as a whole), GradeScout social media interview
Best Lab Simulation
(2)
When students and staff are forced to stay home, such as during pandemics, it can be difficult to perform science experiments remotely or without equipment. We want you to help solve this problem by designing a digital lab experiment on any topic covered in your school district's science curriculum. You will not be scored based on what scientific topic you choose. It can be (for example) about an environmental science topic you learned in middle school or perhaps a physics topic you learned in high school, regardless of what grade you currently attend. It can be a very basic topic or a very complex topic, but we want to make sure students using it can collect, analyze, and learn from data based on the experiment(s) performed.
Prizes:
1st: 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member), Axure RP Team Edition 1 Year Free (for two team members)
2nd: 1 year of Wolfram|One Personal Edition plus 1 year of Wolfram|Alpha Pro (for each team member), Lifetime Taskade Starter Plan (for each team member)
Submission Prizes
Thanks to our sponsors, all of our participants who submit projects will receive the following:
Echo3D Premium - Free for 1 Month
Voiceflow Team License - Free for 6 Months
Taskade Starter Plan - Free for 1 Year
Balsamiq Free Trial Extension Code - 90 days (does not have monetary value according to Balsamiq)
Keep in mind that the cash value shown for this prize is calculated as being divided among many participants, but depends on how many people submit projects.
The winner shown for this category is the 1st place winner in Best Hack for Education, but every project will receive this prize. Devpost requires us to select one project to be the "winner" for this category.
